[0:00] Hello, this is Sky. You're hearing my own voice. I'll be here with you until sleep. You don't need to listen closely. You can drift off whenever you like. There's nothing to get right tonight. For now, just let yourself be held by the sound of my voice. Let's begin. If With You Until Sleep has become a little part of your nighttime routine, and you'd like to stay a while, I've created a membership for listeners who would like a little more company in the quiet hours with ad-free listening, and exclusive extended sleep companion each month.
[1:02] And of course, becoming a member also helps me continue making these little calm spaces for you. We already have three episodes. You'll find the link in the description. And now, let's settle in for tonight's journey. The manor house is quiet tonight, not completely silent because an old house is rarely completely silent, there are the small sounds that belong to it the settling of timber somewhere in the walls the faint whisper of air moving along an old corridor and.
[1:57] A soft tick from a clock that's been keeping its patient rhythm for longer than anyone can remember. And somewhere far away, there's a gentle sound of a branch touching against a window. Everything is still. The kind of stillness that comes late at night when the rooms have emptied and the day has gone elsewhere. The manor seems to have folded itself into the darkness. The lamps are low. The corridors are shaded.
[2:38] And the familiar rooms are resting quietly behind their closed doors. There's something comforting about knowing that they're all still here.
[2:51] The library with its tall shelves and secret places. The drawing room with its soft chairs and curtains hanging heavily at the windows.
[3:03] The conservatory where leaves gather the faint silver of the moon the ballroom sleeping beneath its great ceiling, the still room quiet and warm and beyond the mall there are rooms that are not often visited at night rooms that seem to belong to another time, one of those rooms is the billiard room, it's not difficult to find there's a corridor on the ground floor that turns away from the main rooms and at the end of it is a wide wooden door, the door is darker than the walls around it its brass handle has been polished by generations of hands, there's a small keyhole beneath it although the door is not locked it never seems to be locked the billiard room has always been a room that people could enter, a room for an evening game a room for conversation, a room where someone might disappear for half an hour after dinner returning eventually with a smile and a faint smell of cigar smoke clinging to their clothes.
[4:31] The door opens quietly. Beyond it, the room is larger than it first appears. The ceiling is high. The walls, covered in deep red and gold-striped wallpaper. The colors have softened with age, but they're not faded away. The red is still rich. The gold catches light in small places. there's something almost theatrical about it not grand in the way of the ballroom not elegant in the way of the drawing room, something warmer a little more playful, a little more serious, a room that was made for people to stay a while.
[5:24] The billiard table stands in the center it is enormous the green cloth is darkened slightly with age, and there are tiny marks here and there where the game has been played over many years, the wooden frame has been polished so often it has a deep mellow shine along one edge of the table is a small collection of chalk marks, some fresh, some old, little traces of countless games. The balls are gathered together in their wooden triangle at one end. They're not perfectly new. They've been used. The white cue ball has a few tiny marks. The colored balls have lost just a little of their original brightness. The red ones are deep and glossy.
[6:32] The yellow one's warm beneath the lamplight. The black eight ball sits among them with a small white circle and a number. Everything is waiting. The room seems almost ready for someone to walk in and begin. Against one wall, the billiard cues stand in their rack. There are more of them than anyone would need. Some are slender and pale. Others are darker, made from richly colored wood. They stand in their places with quiet order. A few have been worn smooth, where hands have held them again and again. There's a queue with a slightly darker handle. Another with a tiny decorative ring near the bindle. One is older than the others. and its wood has taken on the warm color of honey.
[7:41] The rack itself is made beautifully. There are little hooks beneath it for the brushes and rests used during a game. A long wooden rest stands in the corner, and beside it, a small brush lies on a shelf. There's dust on the shelf. Not much. Just enough to show that the room belongs to the night now, the billiard table is no longer being used not tonight but has the appearance of having been used only moments ago, as though the players have stepped away for a while as though they might return, there are four leather chairs around the room one in each corner they're deep and dark brown, the leather has softened over the years and the arms are slightly worn, each chair has its own character.
[8:55] One has a small crease running down the center of its back, another has a faint scratch near one arm the chair nearest the window is the most worn of all it looks as though someone spent many evenings there watching, waiting.
[9:18] And perhaps keeping score. Maybe simply enjoying the company. The window itself is tall and narrow. The curtains are drawn almost completely, leaving only a slim opening between them. Moonlight finds its way through. It falls across the carpet in a pale strip, The carpet is patterned in dark reds and muted golds. The colors echo the wallpaper. Everything in the room seems to belong together. Red. Gold. Brown. Green. Warm wood. Soft leather.
